Steve Carell is one of the most versatile actors living today. While largely known for his comedic ability, having tickled audiences funny bones in such films as The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Get Smart, he has also turned his hand to drama. Dan in Real Life, Beautiful Boy, and Welcome to Marwen are just three of the films that have showcased the actor's ability to move audiences with tears that are not solely instigated by laughter.

Carell is, of course, also known for his TV work. He won the role of loveable boss Michael Scott in The Office, beating several other actors who were up for the part. And more recently, he played the buffoonish leader of the Space Force, the recent Netflix show that has divided critic and public opinion.

He has turned in many great performances over the years, with many of them having one thing in common: The characters he has portrayed have largely been nice guys.

There have been occasional exceptions, of course. He was pretty mean-spirited in The Way Way Back as an overbearing boyfriend to a young teen's mother. And he was creepily effective as the real-life villain John Du Pont in the celebrated movie, Foxcatcher.

But by and large, Carell has built up a nice guy persona thanks to the roles he has played. But is he really so nice in real life? Could it be that he's not the lovable and endearing guy that we think he is? Could he in fact be more despicable than Gru, the villainous character he voiced in three successful animated movies?

Well, evidence suggests Steve Carell is a nice guy offscreen as well as on. As Gru was hardly despicable at all, the same can be said of the actor, despite his occasional villainous turn. Here's the evidence to prove it.

There are those actors in Hollywood who are allegedly not so nice to work with. Jennifer Aniston, Bruce Willis, and Christian Bale are just some of the actors who have garnered a bad reputation over the years for being divaish and mean-spirited. It could be said that fame and fortune has gone to their heads, but the same cannot be said about Steve Carell.

In Andy Greene's bookThe Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s, it was clear that Carell was one actor who didn't let stardom go to his head, despite becoming a major movie star during the years that he was on the show.

In extracts highlighted in a recent article at Uproxx, cast and crew members of The Office shared their experiences of working with the actor. These are some of the things his coworkers said about him.

"He was just the greatest. He is truly the loveliest man in Hollywood."

"I don't remember in the nearly ten years of that show that Steve Carell ever said a bad word about anybody. He was so gracious and so kind. He's just a class act."

"He became a sort of big movie star during the course of The Office, but nothing ever changed. He was still the same Steve."

The producer on the show, Randy Cordray, also gave his glowing opinion of the actor. He said:

"To this day, in my long and varied careers, Steve Carell is the most wonderful and most professional actor and the best human of anyone I have ever worked with."

High praise indeed for the rising actor. In Greene's book, there is actually a whole chapter devoted to how great Steve Carell is, with several stories that showcase his kindness and humility. As quoted on Uproxx, this is one such tale told by a crew member.

"On location, when everyone was jammed into a van, Carell would be the first to hop out, open the door, and "help everyone out of the van. He'd help the crew out of the van. I have never seen that in anyone before or since … he would stand there, and he would help every single person out of the van. And if you had a chair, he'd grab your chair and walk it over to the trailer. He was always such a gentleman. And so kind."

By the time Steve Carell left The Office in 2011, he was a big thing in Hollywood, but it is clear that the superstardom the actor experienced did not corrupt his kindly persona. Evidence points towards him being a down-to-earth guy that people very easily fall in love with, and there are further clues why below.

Steve Carell Is An All-Round Nice Guy

Steve Carell is an all-around nice guy, and you need only look to his fans for evidence of this.

On meeting the actor, one user on Reddit said:

"Met him at an ice cream place in a small town. Couldn't have been nicer. Very down to earth, charming, took pictures with everybody. Then I saw him again maybe three months later on a studio lot in LA and he remembered me. Pretty wild."

He is also very charitable, supporting such causes as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Worldwide Orphans Foundation, and the Alliance For Children's Rights.

And in his life outside of movie and TV stardom, he prioritizes time with his family, runs a general store with his wife, and plays ice hockey with the local leagues in his neighborhood.

Steve Carell is hardly despicable at all! Quite the opposite, in fact. It could be said that he is one of the kindest, humblest, and yes, one of the nicest guys working in and out of Hollywood today!
